So, I bring this up quite often in person and figured I would ask here as well. I read quite a bit, almost constantly in fact, and one constant is that most writers either have amazing worlds or amazing characters. Some very few manage both, and those few create some of the most amazing work I have ever read. But disregarding those extreme cases, which do you think is the most important for your personal enjoyment of a story? Are you drawn to deep, complex characters? or interesting characters? Obviously we all prefer to have a mixture of the two, but I know that I will read a story with bland characters if the world itself is interesting enough. What about you?

Having an interesting world is good, but I'm liable to view that sort of book as more of a travelogue than an actual story. Characters are everything for me if I'm going to really get into a story. With good characters I could read an entire book set in a dentist's waiting room and not care.
